This past weekend brought measurable snow accumulations in our tri-state area, with Media, PA seeing 6 inches, Haddonfield, NJ measuring 5.7 inches and Wilmington, DE

coming in 5.4 inches. This snow storm was a sharp reminder that winter is almost here (Sunday, December 21st!) and its time to prepare our homes for the next few months. Winter weather can be harsh on your home, and your roof is the first line of defense. Snow, ice, wind, and freezing temperatures can all lead to leaks, heat loss, and interior damage if your roof isn’t properly protected; here are five important ways to keep your roof safe, your home warm, and your interior protected this winter.

1. Seal Attic Air Leaks and Maintain Proper Ventilation

Proper ventilation keeps roof temperatures consistent and helps prevent moisture buildup in the attic. This protects roofing materials and reduces the risk of mold, rot, and insulation damage. Warm air escaping from your home can melt snow on your roof and increase the risk of moisture issues. Sealing attic air leaks around vents, light fixtures, and attic access points helps maintain indoor warmth and reduces stress on your roof. Proper ventilation keeps roof temperatures consistent and helps prevent moisture buildup in the attic.

2. Consider Installing Ice and Snow Guards

Installing ice and snow guards on your roof is an important step in improving safety during the winter months. These guards help control the release of snow and ice, preventing dangerous and sudden slides that can damage property or injure people below. Ice and snow guards allow snow to melt gradually, reduce stress on your roof system and help protect gutters and shingles from damage. Southeastern Pennsylvania, South & Central New Jersey and Delaware can see a combined total of over 30 inches of snow each year, and we at Bonner Master Roofing feel that ice and snow guards are a smart investment that enhances winter safety while extending the life of your roof.

3. Ensure Your Roof Has Proper Drainage

Proper roof drainage is essential to protecting your home from water damage, especially during heavy rain and wet winter weather. When water cannot flow off your roof correctly, it can pool, seep beneath shingles and lead to leaks, mold growth and structural damage. Clogged or improperly installed gutters and downspouts also increase the risk of ice dams, fascia rot, and foundation issues. Investing in proper roof drainage now helps extend the life of your roof and prevents costly roof repairs later.

4. Roof Penetration Seals

Areas around chimneys, vents, and skylights are common leak points. Ensuring these seals are intact helps prevent water intrusion that can lead to ceiling stains, drafts, and interior damage.

5. Monitor Interior Warning Signs

Roof issues often show signs inside the home first. Watch for water stains, peeling paint, drafts, or moisture in the attic. Catching these early can prevent costly repairs.
