What Is the Noise Like on a Metal Roof?

Blackmetalroof.jpg

It’s one of the first questions we hear from homeowners considering a metal roof:

“Aren’t metal roofs noisy when it rains?”

The short answer: not when they’re installed correctly.

At Bonner Master Roofing, we’ve been installing metal roofs for years, and we’ve yet to have a single customer complain about noise inside their home. Modern metal roofing systems are engineered very differently from what most people imagine — they’re not the same as the thin metal panels you might see on barns or warehouses.

Here’s what makes the difference:

1. The Roof Deck and Underlayment Deadens Sound

Residential metal roofs are installed over a solid wood deck, not open framing. Between the deck and the panels, we install a rubberized underlayment that cushions the metal and absorbs vibration. This combination effectively deadens the “ping” sound that people associate with old tin roofs.

2. Attic Design Matters

If a home has a large, open attic, there’s naturally more air space for sound to reverberate. The same acoustic effect can make things like attic fans or HVAC systems sound louder in those spaces. In most modern homes with insulation and drywall ceilings, however, the difference in sound between metal and shingles is minimal to nonexistent.

3. Trim and Accessory Noise

Some trim metals along walls or parapets are hollow, and occasionally, if a gutter above is leaking or overflowing, you may hear water hitting that surface. But that’s the same sound you’d hear from window sill capping or aluminum trim — not something unique to metal roofing.

Many homeowners who switch to metal roofing tell us afterward that the gentle sound of rain on the roof is actually soothing. It’s a soft, consistent patter — not the loud echo most people imagine. For many, it becomes one of their favorite features of owning a metal roof.

The “Rain Sound” Myth

The Bottom Line

Metal roofing does not make your home sound like a barn in a thunderstorm. When installed properly — over decking, insulation, and underlayment — the difference in sound compared to a traditional shingle roof is typically within 6 dB of asphalt shingles, which is barely noticeable to the human ear.  And for those who appreciate the sound of rain, it’s one more reason to love your metal roof.
